Don’t Panic: AI Essentials for RNs & Healthcare Professionals

The growing use of artificial intelligence in medicine is paralleled by growing concern among healthcare providers and patients alike. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are increasingly common in health care. They are used for things like diagnosis, treatment, health research and drug development. Specific uses can include evaluating cardiovascular images, identifying eye disease, and detecting bone fractures. The specific potential benefits of such tools in health care, as well as the risks and unintended challenges potentially associated with their implementation, are not well understood. Understanding AI and ethical and legal considerations can help nurses and healthcare professionals implement it safely and effectively.

Session objectives:

  • Define AI
  • Describe 4 ways that are currently being used and/or researched for near term implementation.
  • Identify sources of bias and error in AI systems.
  • Explain the principles of AI governance.

Successful completion of learning activity:

Participants who view the recorded voice-over PowerPoint presentation in its entirety, complete the evaluation form, and pass the post-test with 80% or higher will receive an electronic certificate via email. RNs completing the activity will receive 2.0 contact hours of continuing education.

The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
